How to Enhance Home Security with Windows and Doors

Many reports reveal that in the United States, a burglary occurs every 18 seconds. It only takes less than 10 minutes for an average burglary to last. Close to 30% of home burglaries allowed the criminals to enter a property through the windows and doors.

It is not difficult or expensive to keep your home safe from burglars. You just need to eliminate the weak points. Burglars get discouraged and immediately leave the scene when it is riskier and more difficult to get into a home.

You can reduce the risk of burglary in your home by making it less appealing to burglars than the other homes in your community. This can be done by enhancing your home security.

Windows

The best security practices should include the entire home. Secure and energy-efficient windows though play an important role because they are the most vulnerable to burglars.

The safety of your windows begins with the selection of the right window styles with security features.

There are keys locks for every type of window. You can lock a double-hung window by “pinning” the lower and upper frames with a nail that can be detached from the inside.

You can opt to install metal accordion gates for windows that open onto fire escapes. You can also install grilles and iron grates for windows that are at street level.

You can also choose to install impact-resistant windows. These windows are designed to withstand impacts from burglar tools, the weather, and flying debris. Impact-resistant windows are mounted with a heavy-duty frame and firmly anchored on the interior frame of the window.

While impact windows are safe and secure they are not impenetrable. However, instead of shattering, they will just splinter after impact. It is difficult though to cut through impact-resistant windows they deter burglars from pushing through with their criminal activity.

Doors

Security doors should be made from solid hardwood or metal. They should at least have a thickness of 1-3/4 inches. Their frames should also be made of similarly strong materials. Remember that if you have a weak door, no efficient lock can ever protect it from burglars.

It is also important to have a wide-angle viewer, a peephole, or a door chain to know who is at the door before opening it. Sliding doors can be easy to open and placing a broomstick in the door channel can help. Deadbolt locks are best for sliding doors, though.

No matter how much you invest in security windows and doors but do not practice home security, your home will never be safe from burglars:

  • Make sure to lock all windows and doors.
  • Install an alarm system and also turn it on.
  • Never announce your vacation plans in your social media accounts.
  • Always handle and secure your home keys.
  • Never place your name and home address in your key rings.
  • Avoid hiding your home keys in secret places within the perimeter of your home. Burglars know exactly where to look for them.

Your home is one of the biggest investments in your lifetime. Most of your treasured memories and valuable things are in your home. Secure your home with security windows and doors.
